Man Mo Temple

Taoistyczna Świątynia Man Mo została wybudowana w 1847 roku na zachodnim krańcu ulicy Hollywood Road. Świątynia poświęcona jest Bogowi Literatury (Man) i Wojny (Mo), którym studenci w Cesarskich Chinach oddawali cześć, by zdać egzamin urzędnika służby cywilnej.

W Kung Sor często rozstrzygano lokalne spory.

W tamtych czasach (koniec XIX wieku) przed rozpoczęciem procesu, zarówno oskarżony jak i oskarżyciel, składał bogom przysięgę paląc kadzidełka oraz odcinając głowę koguta przed świątynią. Sprawy rozstrzygała rada składająca się z kilku cieszących się szacunkiem starców, której wyroki niemal zawsze były przestrzegane.

Man Mo Temple czynna jest codziennie do godz. 17:00. Najszybciej dotrzemy do świątyni ze stacji MTR Central lub Hong Kong a także przystani promowej Star Ferry, kierując się w stronę centrum handlowego IFC Mall. Stamtąd idziemy kładką do Central Market aż dojdziemy do schodów ruchomych. Schodami ruchomymi jedziemy do Hollywood Road, schodzimy na ulicę i podążamy za drogowskazem.

The Man Mo Temple is a picturesque tribute to the God of Literature (Man) and the God of War (Mo), both of whom were worshipped by ambitious students looking to succeed in the civil examinations of Imperial China.

Built in 1847, this remains the largest Man Mo temple in Hong Kong.

Man Mo Temple is part of a complex that also includes the areas Lit Shing Kung and Kung Sor. Lit Shing Kung was created for the worship of all heavenly gods, while Kung Sor, built to the temple’s west, was an important assembly hall where community affairs and disputes were often discussed and settled.

“Back then certain religious rituals had to be perfomed in the temple before the proceedings began. These including swearing a vow by burning incense, and cutting the head of the rooster in front of the temple by both the accuser and the accused (…) The task of arbitration and final statment was entrusted to to a few respected elders, whos judgment was almost invariably obeyed”
