The Standard.

Thousands of small fish leaped out of Victoria Harbour onto the stairs of a Fire Service pier in Central in a never-before- seen phenomenon.

Two firemen collected the fish into buckets and released them back to the harbor.

Though it sounds alarming, marine expert Chong Dee-hwa said Monday night’s event is a positive sign, as it shows the harbor has become cleaner and the fish are coming back.

The Ichthyological Society of Hong Kong president identified the fish as mullets, which eat algae and microorganisms at the water surface and live in shoals of thousands. The mullet may have leaped on shore after being scared by bigger fish or the sound of a ship’s engine.
